We selected this lovely photograph of the flowering mustard fields of Kashmir as a special way to honor the birthplace of the great naturopath Dr. Shyam Singha as well as the magic of mustard he used in his original Mustard Bath and Mustard Rub formulations.  Using simple solutions, Dr. Singha was about educating and helping people to flourish. Allow us to help you find new ways to nourish yourself using "Food As Medicine" as taught by Dr. Singha, who stressed the importance of balancing the body's pH to help avert dis-comfort before it turns into dis-ease.  Dr. Singha helped people discover many ways to alkalinize.  He suggested decreasing or dropping acid-forming foods until the body could regain balance, at which time, small amounts of dairy, sugar, red meat, and wheat products could be re-introduced into a diet of 70 - 80% raw food.  Dr. Singha was about balance not rigidity, saying, "It's what you do 80% of the time that counts."  

Dr. Singha also taught that each person is infinitely unique.  He emphasized listening to one's inner voice and ignoring fads. His Mustard Bath formula was one of his main tools to help achieve pH balance. In Praise of the Onion, Clark Kent of the Kitchen

Who would ever guess that the humble onion was like Superman in disguise?  Red onions especially are the Super-veg, with healing properties too numerous to list.   Dr. Singha used onions in almost every meal and taught that the onion is beneficial in the treatment of coughs, colds, bronchitis, influenza, and numerous other ailments.  According to Dr. Singha, onions not only strengthen the lungs to help prevent respiratory dis-ease, but also cleanse the colon.  If red onions are not available, he suggested using yellow.

Make the powerful onion your very best ally this winter.  The red onion contains Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, calcium, iron, and sulphur.  Dr. Singha listed the onion’s many natural therapeutic benefits as: Antioxidant, antidiabetic, antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial, anticancerous, anthelmintic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, diuretic, expectorant, stomachic, and tonic. Recipes for Warming You in Winter

Ready to take charge of your winter wellness and a healthy holiday season?  Enjoy these two simple and fabulous onion recipes from Dr. Singha.  Red onions preferred!  Remember to cook with joy!  Be bold in the kitchen and play! Invite friends and family in to help make your healing foods a celebration.  Turn up the music while you wash and chop your veggies and herbs.  “Do it with love,” as Dr. Singha wrote in a song, and you will taste and feel the difference.  Cook as Dr. Singha did, making everything a dance. Trust your intuition, imagination, and sense of smell.  Flavor to taste. Enjoy letting go of “shoulds" and "should nots.” Use organic ingredients wherever possible, and remember that ingredients are only half of the recipe, according to the Master holistic healer who said, “It's not the food, it's WHO is cooking!”  Cook with LOVE, the most important ingredient.

Dr. Singha’s Onion Soup for Cold & Flu Season 
  • 1 pound red onions, chopped small
  • 1 – 2 teaspoons organic oil (coconut, safflower, or ghee)
  • A little fresh garlic
  • A little grated fresh ginger
  • A little chili (optional) minced
  • 1 - 2 teaspoons paprika powder
  • A little turmeric
  • 1 – 2 pieces of cinnamon bark
  • A little Celtic sea salt or tamari
  • A little freshly ground black pepper
  • Spring water
  • Seaweed (optional)
Chop the onions and sauté them gently in an organic oil with the paprika, garlic and ginger for a couple of minutes. Add a little sea salt—blend it in—and then add cinnamon bark, turmeric, and spring water, enough to cover the onions well. Simmer until the onions are just cooked, approximately 15 – 20 minutes.  At this point, add plenty of fresh ground black pepper and extra salt (high quality sea salt) or tamari to taste. Remove from heat. 

Of course, this recipe may be varied through experience or intuition.  For respiratory discomfort, Dr. Singha suggested eating this amount of soup daily until feeling well again.  Enjoy!

Dr. Singha’s Cough Syrup Recipe
  • 1 – 2 small red onions, finely chopped
  • Equal volume of organic raw liquid honey
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon fresh ground cinnamon
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon fresh ground cloves
  • If the cough is chronic, add:
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon fresh grated garlic
Finely chop onions. Place in a non-metallic bowl. Add an equal part of organic raw liquid honey. Add the cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and garlic.  Mix with wooden spoon.  Cover.

Let the mixture stand for 24 – 36 hours at room temperature. The honey will draw out liquid from the solid ingredients. Strain the mixture and pour in glass jars with lids. Refrigerate. 

Dr. Singha suggested use:  1 teaspoon of this mixture can be taken as needed. 

Please note:  It is essential that no water come in contact with this mixture at any time during its preparation. The addition of freshly squeezed lemon or orange juice can be most beneficial.  You may choose to keep one jar of the original recipe, and a second jar mixed with citrus juice.

Keep Your "Qi," Add Warmth in Winter 

Changing seasons can take our bodies by surprise, so prepare!  Winter reflects the water element in Chinese medicine.  In the year’s cycle of seasons, it’s a time for rest, quiet, and energy conservation.  It is natural for our bodies and souls to contract in the cold and dark with a need for more rest, introspection, and additional inner and outer warmth. Traditional herbalists suggest eating warming and alkaline foods, and using alkaline herbal products to balance your pH for health.  The Chinese rarely drink icy or cold beverages, only hot tea and hot water, a health secret practiced in Asia for thousands of years.

Winter is a time to nourish the kidneys with hot soups and stews.  Did you know that kidney-shaped kidney beans actually nourish the kidney essence which governs the challenged water element in winter?
